The Great Digital Film Festival 2016: Interview with Brad LaDouceur, Vice President - Event Cinema Cineplex Entertainment

Interview by CalgaryMovies.com

The countdown to this year’s Great Digital Film Festival is on! Cineplex Events has announced the line-up for its annual celebration of pop-culture films, screening at Scotiabank Theatre Chinook in Calgary from February 5-11,2016.

Canada’s only coast-to-coast film festival brings a week of sci-fi, fantasy and cult fan favorites back to the big screen, often for the first time in digital format.

In anticipation of the #GDFF2016, we had an opportunity to chat with Cineplex Entertainment's Vice President of Event Cinema, Mr. Brad LaDouceur:

CalgaryMovies.com: How many years have this festival been on for?
Brad LaDouceur: This is the festival’s seventh year.

CM: What’s the purpose of the festival?
Brad: The Great Digital Film Festival is Canada’s only coast-to-coast film festival bringing a week of sci-fi, fantasy and cult fan favorites back to the big screen, often for the first time in digital format. Canadians have such a deep bond with their favourite movies and I think that’s why the festival has been so successful over the years.

CM: Can you briefly how the festival works?
Brad: Films screening at the festival are classics remastered for digital cinema, that the festival is bringing back on the big screen.

CM: Are the movies curated so that you can do a daily marathon for an entire week?
Brad: Each day follows a theme. Each day’s programming is series or a selection with a similar vibe, scheduled as a marathon.

CM: How did you/your team come up with the line up?
Brad: Each year, we listen to what the audience want to see and work with film studios to find out what’s new and never before presented digitally. We’ve made an effort to find out what our guests want to see on the big screen and offer them a memorable week of movies.

CM: I see that there are some films that are relatively new. How did they get in the line up of classic films?
Brad: The relatively new films are usually part of an older series that complete the series or the theme we are presenting. We especially like when we pair up an evening of the Mad Max films and see director George Miller’s version for both of them.

CM: Are the films shown, digitally enhanced or remastered? Sound?
Brad: All presented films have been remastered by the producers or studios for digital cinema.  Many are captured at 4K resolution using the original 35mm or 70mm negatives to produce the best possible image for our audience.  Often films that were once presented in stereo have now all be remastered to include a 5.1 or 7.1 digital audio soundtrack.

CM: So what’s next? What can we look forward to?
Brad: The team is already at work on putting together the theme and vibe for next year’s festival.  One of our goals for next year is to get fans even more involved and engage them in further building the festival.
