Kusama – Infinity directed by Heather Lenz is an American feature length documentary. This film follows the life and work of Yayoi Kusama, her artistic process and psychological trials. Lenz paints an elegant portrait of Kusama as she and various art experts describe her life and the persistence it took for her to become internationally recognized.

Kusama – Infinity is very good. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the arts. This documentary has a delicate combination of the ‘talking head’ technique and supplemental footage to convey its message. I found the techniques utilized engaging and immersive. The portrayal of Kusama is beautiful in its complexity. She is both fragile and powerful, the huntress and the hunted, and it is perhaps this natural human sincerity that I found so interesting to watch. Her art is breathtaking and beautifully displayed. There is certainly an underlying message regarding feminism and the difficulty that minorities have in such a patriarchal society, but I would not describe it as blatant. There is a humility in Kusama’s story that is very endearing.

The film is 80 minutes long. It is rated PG and it contains nudity, discussion of depression and Kusama’s suicide attempt.

Kusama – Infinity will be premiering nationally as a part of the 15th Calgary Underground Film Festival 2018 (CUFF). It will be screening on Thursday, April 19th at 6:45pm at the Globe Cinema.
