To our CalgaryMovies.com fans, friends and film-lovers family,

 

Together, we (Wilson & Chris) are writing this message with sadness and great feelings of joy, delight and sentiments as we reflect back on the past 23 years of CalgaryMovies.com.

 

We want to thank each and everyone of you who used our community website, which we enabled as a platform to elevate our beloved city’s arts and culture scene. The website was always kept free to use, so that it can be accessible to everyone with our goal to bring the love of film to Calgary as our gift. For us, through this website, we gained something that is priceless. Nothing can compare to the connections, relationships and community this website has facilitated with the friends, writers, content producers, film industry partners, and promoters we have met.

 

The COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns was unfair and hard on those in the film, theater, music, arts industry and the media that promotes it. For CalgaryMovies.com, we have been happily running our site at breakeven over the last few years. With streaming becoming more prominent, we watched our traffic slowly decline along with lower ad rates/revenues and finally when COVID-19 hit, our supporting revenue source plummeted. It was also unfortunate that we were too small to receive any sort of government related COVID funding support, or we may have been able to push forward.

 

We have made the difficult decision to stop updating our website with showtime information. In looking to our future, we felt that it is time for us to pivot and figure out what’s next,  We will remain active on our social channels (Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) so that we can continue to connect with you. We are also considering selling the domain name and brand assets, and/or donating what we have built to the community. Recognizing that some of you will reach out and offer some form of donation/funding to save the website, however we believe that would only put a short term band-aid over our business model economics. We would like to see any kind of donation go toward supporting local screenings, local theatres, or Calgary film groups.

 

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It truly has been a wonderful journey and adventure over the last two decades. The curtains may have come down on CalgaryMovies.com, but we hope to see you soon in the sequel in whatever format we can to continue to participate in and give our love to this industry and our city.
